I like the extra light idea, although I often am welding in areas where I can't fit the lamp on top of my helmet. I bought a 5-pack of small LED Cree flashlights off of Amazon (about $3 apiece!), and with #1450 Li-ion batteries they put out 300 lumens. The lights are small and light enough that I stick them to the side of my helmet with velcro tape.

Back when I did heavy collision work for other body shops I used the quartz light from Mitler Brothers on my plasma gun and my mig gun as well. I had a good reputation as a welder but it was probably just because I invested in equipment so I could see what the heck I what I was doing. When your cutting out spot welds with a plasma cutter you can never have too much light. ~ John Buchtenkirch

I'm not expert enough to answer that question, but I've heard more knowledgeable weldors says that helmets are only good for a few years.

Mine all seem to work fine. It depends what you are doing and what industry. I don't weld nearly as much as I used to, but it is usually headgear (cheap) or auto-darkening lenses (expensive).
