How to bead the center of this fender?
I'd like to do a small bead down the center. I can only go 1/8 inch high or maybe a bit more, width maybe 1/2 inch or so. Any suggestions on how to do it with simple hand tools on simply made tools?
In case you're wondering I decided to do all the shaping on the wheel. It's 80 thou on the edges where there's no wheeling and about 60 thou in the middle. https://s6.postimg.cc/59nbktmb5/IMG_10670.jpg https://s6.postimg.cc/u2wvlhd1d/IMG_10684.jpg https://s6.postimg.cc/zebs66joh/IMG_10685.jpg https://s6.postimg.cc/3uzj1d7dt/IMG_10690.jpg |

Simply take your top wheel off.use a shaft equal to the bolt that keeps your top wheel on, bend it to clear the cradle then put two round rollers on it, space them out to the distance required. As for the bottom .... use a shaft with a welded washer with a blunt edge position it in the middle of the two rollers and then squeeze
the two with the guard in position Peter PS do this with a few passes........................... |
Nice job all round Jeff!

If you're looking to do it very simply you could chase it in by hand. Perhaps making up some sort of guide to keep it neat - take a look at how guys are doing similar on reciprocating machines, and then translate that to a manual operation. So maybe a wood template of the profile across the short direction of the top, that will allow you to feed the fender through. Create a groove in the centre to match the bead you want (metal inserts on the edges will keep it crisp), then make up a chasing tool.
The operation is likely to need an extra pair of hands - one guy hammers/chases while the other feeds.. |

I made this tooling to bead fenders with my wheeling machine. The o-ring in the center of the bead is there to help follow a line.

Good work. Or you can use hard rubber or polyurethane and simply get a nice shape without a precise tool.

Very clever, Mr. Adame. You are a gifted machinist as well.

I like the permanent black line, Bob. Good noodling. :)

Thanks for all the suggestions. This is a great website!
I combined a couple of the ideas that were mentioned and came up with this. Hammer powered hand chaser? I think it's going to do the job. This trial is on an off cut from the fender. https://s6.postimg.cc/l6hyngw29/IMG_10697.jpg https://s6.postimg.cc/94mktbf41/IMG_10698.jpg |
