VW fender/wing patch panel
5 Attachment(s)
I offered to make a VW Wing/Fender patch panel for a friend. It of course took me longer than I thought.:(
The bottom of one side was in a poor state due to rust, as seen below Attachment 48253 Having taken a paper pattern and cut some steel sheet I stretched the centre in the wheel to get the required crown. I then tipped the curved outer edge which will be turned 180 degrees to give the wheel arch shape Attachment 48254 Comparing to the required profile Attachment 48255 To get the correct folded shape, I welded a steel female die to a pair of vice grips and reprofiled the other jaw using weld bead and a file. This worked fine once sufficient side clearance was put in. I did buy a pair of pipe grips which have removable jaws, I may try these next time. Attachment 48256 Despite using the Lancaster to stretch the flange for the concave part of the curve and shrinking it for the convex part before tipping, I did lose the correct edge profile. I therefore made a pattern/hammerform of the edge shape which I used to correct the patch panel. The hammerform was 6mm steel rod with a 3X20 mm steel strip welded on to stiffen it up. Attachment 48257 I will metal finish the whole wing, when my pal has welded the patch in. End. |
Nice little project.
