Default My introduction

Hi,

I saw something made out of hammered sheet metal, and figured that I could make it myself for 1/10 the price, plus I like making stuff. I've finally moved someplace that has a Makerspace within a reasonable drive, so I figured I'd join and try working there. I don't have the money (or space) to get a ton of tools, and I've been known to buy tons of stuff for projects that I never get around to doing. I'm curious what information you have here, and might ask a question or two if I can't get answers from someone at the Makerspace.

Welcome Alice. As you can see from the June 2017 metalshaper of the month, the rose by David K, we don't just do auto bodies here, we also do metal art. Ask as many questions as you want, but it always helps to post photos of what you are working on.

Hi Alice, welcome! There are a lot of very talented people here! They have been very helpful to my learning, and trust me, they have been great at answering my questions! So please ask as many questions that you want and don't be bashful. The folks here are great and I think you will be amazed at the many creations that lie here in!
I wish you the very best!
Dave

Another metal artist here. Flowers, fish, birds. No more rotted out cars for me. Ask away.

Welcome to the forum, Alice.

When I got my Lancaster-style shrinker/stretcher, I quickly demonstrated how it works by making my wife an aluminum barrette (basically a mini version of a tapered motorcycle fender....), added a quick hammered finish and then riveted on a clip for her hair. She's been wearing it regularly ever since, for 15-16 yrs now.. Very cool.

Making small art/utility pieces that get used daily is really great. And you don't need many tools to do great work.

Hi Alice, Welcome to the forum.
Makerspace can be a helpful place - lucky you have one nearby.
I guess if you were from So. TX you'd be making one of these ....?

- not my work - found next to the road outside of Uvalde, as I was going to make airplane metal art ...
