Default Chrome removal

If I'm going to remove some dents and straighten some detail work, is it better to remove the chrome first?

That is what a bumper re-platting shop would do. But they have some spendy chemicals and equipment.

There are a few "home made" recipes online, but one recipe removes the chrome, another removes the nickel, yet another removes any copper used...

As you can imagine, it's really not a DIY project.

Joe, you might talk to a chrome shop. I was talking to one about some work and they said they would dip to remove the chrome and let me fill pits, etc, then they would start the plating process with me polishing between each step.

Kerry and Chris have the procedure correct. You find a plating shop to work with and they will strip all of the chrome ,nickel and copper frome your part and explain what they want you to do to your part. They then can do the copper bases and you can block sand the copper finish like you were sanding primer untill it is smooth and then they will do the nickel and chrome finish. The second copper coat is the filler like fill primer and this will fill all of the imperfections.Dutch

Thanks for your responses Chris and Kerry. Chris I wasn't planning to try and remove the chrome myself, that would be beyond what I would try. And I try all kinds of things.

Kerry that was what I was thinking, talking to a local chrome shop.

But I guess I better make my question a little clearer. Is it easier to move and repair the shape of the metal with the chrome removed???? I guess what else I was wondering, does the chrome make the metal harder to move?

Thanks Dutch. That makes things clearer. So I take it, remove the chrome, then do the repairs, then take it in to have rechromed.
