Default Heat shrinking gizmo

IMG_0612.jpg

IMG_0613.jpgToday I was fighting the dreaded oil canning in a low crown panel.I was able to to get most of the problem worked out with a shrinking disc but one trouble area remained near the inner wheel housing. There was no good way to get a dolly back there to back it up and do any torch shrinking so I needed another way. Then I remembered on a visit to Cass Nawrocki's shop he showed us a wooden shrinking disc that he made for tight spots. So remembering Bugly tools CEO Roger Pfalzgraf,s motto" Never be to proud to steal a good idea",I came up with this.I grabbed a 1/4 inch bolt and sawed off the head then I sawed off 2 inches off the shop broom handle and center drilled it in the lathe. After a couple of drops of CA glue to attach the wood to the bolt I chucked it in my small angle grinder and pulled the trigger.I had a grand total of 15 mins. into the fabrication of this tool .To my surprise it did not vibrate and shake but ran smooth.I was able to reach to affected area from behind and apply some light rotating pressure. I was surprised at how quickly it worked. This thing gets in those tight areas and shrinks very well. Thanks Cass.

Thanks Robert
I don't remember Cass showing that tool.

Guess I better make one, looks to be pretty handy.

You need to try it Steve. With the high RPM that the small air grinders turn the wood generates a good amount friction/heat. Great for localized shrinking .It took care of my oil can.

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.
