Default What's an Onion Anvil?

Ok Chaps....Question......

I've seen a few different profiles of bottom anvils called 'Onion Wheels'

What are they used for?

Default Bonnet Skin

I made several attempts at getting the bonnet done.

The first attempt involved beating it with a big mallet.

That ended in the bin.

The second attempt involved bending, beating, heat shrinking, panel beating, the shrinker / stretcher / a shrinking disc etc

I got it closer

but before I spent a couple hours sanding it, it was an utter mess.

I was afraid it was going to crack due to hard and soft patches from all the heat I put into it.
There was nigh on 5 weekends work in getting this far.
I've never done metalwork like this before so it was good practice so the skills learn't won't go to waste.

I wasn't happy, so I watched a load of youtube and tried a rubber band on the English Wheel.

Lazze made it look easy. But it was worth a go....

20 minutes later I had a perfectly fitting bonnet skin.

Next is the nose section

You got there in the end and have a better understanding of what happens with different techniques, even if they weren't what you wanted at the time.

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.
