Default Spiral Shrinking Hammer

Need your opinion on shrinking hammers, particularly the spiral type.

Most of the problem is below the top of the bed so it not a cosmetic area.

Thanks for your input.

Some say that they work if you know the secret to their magic.....

Others say they were born and bred in Hell to trick young metal shapers into believing there's a way to easily shrink anywhere anytime

Most agree that they don't work on metal but make a pretty good meat tenderizer

There are lots of tricks to this trade....this one removes money from wallets at the beginning of your shaping career.

If the metal was correct before you weldied in the panel likely the problems in the corners are caused by the shrinkage caused when welding, stretch the metal only in the area heated when welding until the metal is released.

Do not under any circumstances go banging about willy nilly in the areas outside the HAZ (heat affected zone) as you will then have a dragon by the tail to reverse the damage you inflict.

(Just my view others might disagree)

Bought one from Eastwood years ago. It was fake, didn’t work & very likely made in Asia. Returned it with a small panel with a high spot in the center made with a dime sized hit point die in my Pettingell power hammer. Asked them to shrink that flat or please return my $$$. Apparently they don’t know the secrete way to use these hammers because they did return my money.

Being a sucker for punishment several years later I purchased Peddinghaus version of the same hammer. I figured the famous German manufacturer of iron workers and auto body tools wouldn’t sell junk that didn’t work. I was wrong again……… does anyone want to buy a German meat tenderizer ? ~ John Buchtenkirch

What's up Tom, have you oil canning from putting the panel in?
It's more likely you need to stretch the HAZ opposed to shrink it, picture of the outside would help, but don't waste your money on the "shrinking" hammer, you'd get more use from a glass one.

Well that's a very positive NO, reason for asking was a thread here somewhere with an old diehard using a wheel with a twisting action to shrink a panel, can't remember who it was. That principle can be compared with a piece of paper held between your thumb and finger, when you rotate the paper it pulls the outside inwards.

Not working this next wk but have taken your advise on board, the welded hazed area holds the problem. Thank you

That was Cass Nawrocki. The technique is sound. The problem with the hammer is that you can't generate the pressure to make it work. The THEORY of the hammer sounds good but in practice no so much.
