You can use Skanect for a 100 bucks but you can play around with the free version but the number of vertices are limited in the free edition. It runs on a cheap old second hand Kinect (30 bucks).

If you use a modern version of the Kinect then Microsoft has a new free tool for scanning. I don't remember the name but the new sensor is said to be even better.

I've had conversations with him about modeling a car body in SW in various ways, including starting from scratch as well as importing 3D scans. He pretty much said this is where SW won't be a good program to do the job, it works best with solid bodies, and sees surfaces much differently than other CAD programs.

Lots of info out there on the Kinect cameras re-purposed as scanners, I want to try but am looking for the right program to dump the data into. Oh, yeah, gotta add: it has to be cheap. (right now, SW comes free for a year with a semester's tuition to the class, because I'm over 60, tuition is also halved for me, so it's a literal steal.)
Hi Mark,

Did he mention what package could be the better option for this?

Kind regards,

Frank

That's the one. But I tried it with the Kinect sensor of my kids Xbos360 ;-)

Frank
hat one shows it with an ipad. I have an ipad.
I'm a bit hesitant to buy the scanner and not know how to use it.

Cool.
Would it be ok the scan the back part of the car?
And will it enable me to make a file to print out slices for a buck? (Full scale)

Bart
I recently got the Ipad model, but haven't had much time to try it out. It will output an STL file. I should be able to import this into ProE. I will try to post how well it works soon.

Frank, he did not. One thing I admire about this instructor is he never offers info where he doesn't feel qualified and wasn't afraid to say: "I don't know the answer to that one."

My understanding of the difference between Meshes (STL) and Sufaces are that surfaces are scalable and contain curve information, a mesh does not.
I would compare a mesh scan to a bitmap picture, which is difficult to edit smoothly.
A surface is a vector format with control points that allow accurate manipulation of a surface and can be blended into another surface with precision.
Editing a surface model to A class standard takes great skill and understanding of the correct procedure to manipulate it, the software is usually expensive.
I have Rhino which I'm learning, it will import a mesh, but won't convert to a surface, I have tried creating a cross section from a 3d mesh model, but the curve quality is rubbish.
