Hi Mark
Looks like somebody covered up a lot of sins on a badly rotted car.
Your repairs are looking good!
Bet the insurance won’t cover all the rust repair ,but good that you are fixing it !

Thanks for sharing with us
Steve

Hi Steve, The car looked okay as long as you didn't spend too much time looking... And yes, it was/is a mess. Floors and rockers will get done, patch work to the rear roof corners and quarters as well.
Hagerty covered the collision damage and repainting the right side of the car but I couldn't bring myself to do just that when it needs so much more. I will handle most of the panel repairs and possibly the floors as soon as I get the seats and carpet stripped out.
Both front fenders, inners and outers, require repairs, replacing a set of butchered frame horns and installing a new splash shield is also in the works.
Lots to do but it will be a nice car when we get her done.
Thanks for the compliments, I know I am cobbling the inner repairs a bit but they will do the job and add in a lot of strength the rot was losing. Once it's finished and painted and the new outers are welded on all of that work disappears anyway.
Mark

Man, that's a lot of work- both the car and the pics & posting. Maybe not as glamorous as some projects but certainly relevant to what many of us have to do to the favorite car we have. Makes me glad my Galaxie isn't a rusty up-north car.

Thanks for posting, Mark.

Hi Mark,

Great posts. This is exactly what I and probably others signed up for on this forum, is to do this and like work on old cars. I assume this was a car that you bought in the condition it is and you had plans that just got sped up by the deer.

Something that I may suggest, what about using weldable primer on these locations, at least it might keep the tin worm from progressing as fast as it did before you got in there.

Keep up the great work and keeping us posted is greatly appreciated, specially with pictures !

Hey Chris, you nailed it! I had no intentions to do a deep dive on this car like I am now. I wanted to do some front end sheet metal work but nothing like this...
The car looked good enough that I was happy to enjoy driving it.
Here are a few pics before and after the accident.

On our trip to the 50th NSRA nats in Louisville. Almost a thousand miles without a problem.

After the meeting with Bambi...

It always amazed me how much rot is under the shiny paint on these old cars. Just be glad it isn't a MOPAR of the same era

You're doing a good job. Keep it up and thanks for posting.

Done a good job piecing all that together. I think replacing the floor and supports would be well within your abilities, and probably easier!

Didn't get much shop time this past week, today was the first I got anything accomplished worth posting.
I got a couple of pieces made for the inner repairs. Still have some fit up and shaping to do but the bulk of the work is done and the panels fit fairly well.
Still using the dead blow hammer and the edge of a steel top work table to form this stuff.
Formed the top piece and got it fit up, under the cowl.

Clecoed in.

Measuring and drawing up and laying out the lower panel.

Trimmed out and the firewall flange is bent up.

Both pieces Clecoed in. I still have to shape the break at the bottom of the firewall where it kicks back for the toe board. The hard parts are done though and I was getting pretty cold by this time...

It's gotten very cold here in Mi. Today was the first snow of the season and we are looking at over 6 inches for a total, probably more before it stops tonight .
