The method you are using will stretch both directions. If you lay the peice on the floor and push down on the center it will give you an idea how much shape you have it the panel. You have the shape even if it is curling up, and looking more like a fender.... You just need to adjust the form into a straighter panel. You would get shape quicker if you stretched it into a bag or a hollow in a stump. Then you could hand planish it out on a dolly. If you have a whole car to build anjd do metalwork on I would suggest getting a shot bag and making a bat hammer. Setting up a stand and post dollys would be good too. You don't have to spend much to make some good tools. I made some of my best post dollys out of bumpers. Here is a link to a few http://allmetalshaping.com/album.php...pictureid=2077 . I made a panel like this for a '37 Desoto, only I had to make the trunk lip and the bead. I ended up making three before I was happy with the fit. Don't be afraid to make some scrap and throw it away. Each one is a learning expearience is the way I look at it.
