Thumbs up New Guy From Western MD

Gentlemen,

My name is Jamie, a 43 year old Industrial mechanic at a global printing company factory. I live in Hagerstown Maryland and I hope to learn and also contribute to this great forum. I consider myself a practical metalworker, I learn new skills to help me build cool toys vs. buy them. My username Ranchero50 comes from the efi 5.0 / 5 speed swap I did to my '68 Ranchero back in the spring '96 and is still going today. More recent projects are my '71 F-350 that I put a Cummins in with a dump bed and a 14' Alumacraft jon boat that got stretched and a Seadoo inboard jet installed among other things. Neither show the level of perfection I've sees on these sites but both function very well and have stood the greatest tests, use and time.

Links are to the built threads for all the projects.

Another project I did over the '13 winter was build a hardtop for my dad's Chris Craft. We started with a sketch and built the top from aluminum. Learned a lot about working large sheets but didn't have the skill set to have it come out as good as I had wished. Hoping to learn that now.

Most recent project is going to be a cafe style fairing for my '05 Harley Sportster. I put the small drag style fairing on and it's OK but not as effective as I need it to be. Looking for metal forming info led me to this site and I'm happy I found it. The skill set and quality of the projects is very heartening.

I've always been more of a cut and paste guy vs. metal beating / forming so I hope to learn a lot about this facet of metal work. I do have a small metal lathe and larger CNC mill in my garage, a couple Mig's and a Tig welder waiting to play.

After watching Wray Schelin's mini jag fender video a couple nights ago on Youtube I found Metal meet and I realised that I really needed a wheel to help smooth out my beaten aluminum. While searching for English wheel designs I found this site. I hope to build a larger one and also finish out a smaller one I picked up at an auction a couple years ago thats missing the lower anvil dies. After a 1 hour road trip to the 'local' Harbor Freight for their larger english wheel but they were out of stock. I did pick up a set of lower anvil dies and decided to make the dang thing vs. buy one. Currently I'm mocking up a Eastwood style 2x4 framed wheel.

I'll try to get up to speed and I know I have a lot of reading to do before asking dumb new guy questions.

Thanks for reading,
Jamie

Hi Jamie and welcome.
I like the centre console tinny, I could do with one of those.

Cheers John
