Default Aussie panel beater

Hi everyone my name's Pat I'm a 50 yo autobody repairer in Brisbane, I started my involvement with panel shops at 13 and was a apprentice panel beater at 15 got my painters ticket at 27 left that shop a year later and worked in a mod shop for a couple of years before I went and worked for a four man workshop at Moorooka ,bought the place when then boss retired ten years later didn't replace staff as the left and for the last ten years I've been a one man show that specialises in late model ex rentals for car yards so as you can imagine there's more repair than replacement.
I do some resto but they get a bit taxing for a one man show old knees don't bend like they used to
unfortunately photos were a pain to take in the 80's and 90's so I don't have many photo's but I'll make the effort to scan the few I have and post them for posterity
Thanks for reading

Yeah warhorse I've got another five years and I'm out,the trade has changed so much in the last ten years with insurance companies buying big panel shops turning them into high output sausage factories that keeps every-ones hourly rate low ,high material cost ,trick colours that require more time than you can charge for and the Australian attitude of being cheapskates when it comes to skilled labour won't bode well for the five man or under shops ,as far as i know I'm one of two one man shows on the southside of Brisbane
But enough doom and gloom I'm still doing well but I do have a skill set and drive that makes it work and I still enjoy repairing cars.

Welcome to the forum Pat. Sad to hear what has happened to the industry here. I might need some advice when I farm out the only job on my project which will be paint!

Invention is a combination of brains and materials.
The more brains you use, the less materials you need.
