Tools I need and which ones first?
i posted this on MM also want to keep supporting that site also.
I would like to know the important tools I'll need and in the order of importance (most used/needed) kinda like "which came first the planishing hammer or the english wheel?" I may have to buy cheap HF stuff initially but I know the drill. I've been down this road before with my cabinet shop. I bought what I could afford and when it earned me enough to upgrade I did. Then I'd either sell that tool to someone starting out or would use it in a different way. |

a lot of the work on bikes can be done by hand tools. some good quality hammers and plastic bosing mallets along with some post dollies might give you better shaping ability. then add a phammer to speed things up. As your skills improve you can build a much stronger e wheel than the hf for the same money.

I'm not gonna set out to be a bike builder, I've built a couple & will build more eventually. My newest venture is building furniture out of Harley parts, old car parts, gas pumps and other antiques or unusual stuff. for easy money and to pay the bills consistently i am gonna also build the yard ornaments/sculptures out of old garden tools, wrenches, and other metal objects in different sizes but with a biker theme to them.
I'll post some pictures in another thread of some of the stuff I'm working on now. |

A "Better way to planish" was brought up in another thread by TDoty so wich method would you start out with first? Phammer or Ewheel? and Why?
I am leaning more towards the wheel because I can buy it and start using it without any more expense (air compressor) plus I lean more towards the tools and methods that will be least expensive to operate and be greener. I'm not a tree hugger by any means but like the concept of saving money and the fact I can be less dependent on the system we've became so dependent on. I'd really like some strong detailed reasons for your choice. |

Start off learning how to planish by hand first(slapper dolly).

Learning to planish by hand is a must. However, long term, I think the method sucks You'll know far more in the end by learning how to do everything by hand and what happens when you do it. Move to "power" once you get the hang of doing it by hand. Even after you have a planishing mechanism (wheel or whatever), there will be those times when you need to planish by hand - bodywork, metalfinishing a weld seam, metalfinshing in general - so it is a very important skill to master.
If you don't have a compressor, by all means start with the wheel! I went with a p-hammer first, simply because it was easier to build and I already had a compressor. The p-hammer still gets used from time to time, but I would much rather use the wheel. My neighbors prefer the wheel too A wheel isn't a power tool, but it still makes things easier on the body when it's all said and done. Tim D. |

If you don't own David Gardiners DVD, you should buy it. A must have for anyone serious about learning metalshaping.
