It is not just a problem on this forum, but numerous other interest forums have suffered the same fate.

The only simple way I see of clawing some of the lost pic's back is by the guys who originally posted them taking responsibility if they feel that way inclined and repost them.

I'm sure any small orientation glitches and the like can be sorted out if they were willing to learn more or ask for help from other forum members.

I am certainly no tech expert but I've never suffered from orientation problems.
They should be sorted out at the time of loading the original pic's into your PC.

I use Windows Picture Manager and it also helps enhance pic's as well as rotating them and resizing them to be accepted by most forum requirements.
