Richard, thanks for the response. I had used the go kart wheel on shorter panels, and was wondering how the longer panel would respond... I don't have room enough for that long of a brake in the shop, so always looking for alternatives...

I think that the bending in the long dirrection is more of a product of not putting as much effort in keeping the panel from sagging as in running a true line . I just made up a back fence for doing long panels as I have some 9 footers to do . I will get pics and show latter .

thanks for all the input guys. I ended up spending (wasting) half the day sand blasting and working with some problematic air bags.. why do mondays go by so quickly?? Should have some time tomorrow to toss some pipes in the floor again and get to cracking on the other side!

wow now compared to that fancy rig the pics I'm going to post tonight look like some hillbilly hitting metal with a dead opossum.

here are the lastest lame attempts!

this is how I roll... the lower pipe is there more for support when I lift.

flipped it over and cleaned it up.

clamped some 1x1's to support the edges

using my ultra super fantastic profile gauges.. cardboard.. I slide the guide up and down until it fits just right then i put dots to corespond with dots on the guide (other side of guide) once this is done i take a nice straight edge and play connect the dots giving me my line of best fit.

then i plasma!!

I hammered and dollied my flange for the bottom but I forgot to take pictures. so speed ahead..

cut along the line. still more rust above requiring a nice butt weld patch!

the other side completely fell off when i cut across. this one had some metal left around the tacks.

can you belive these limo companies? most of those wires are just excess wire and most joints are just taped.... wow

clamped/zip screwed up. still need to wheel in a few areas to smooth out the curve but its much better then the other side initially was!

would have gotten more done but i was distracted by a truck I did years ago. this bed was base cleared and was so pretty. now its trashed. but i'm making him new close out panels and i like the new style

Hi Brent,

You are in good company with your pipe bending. Some of the great names in the custom car business, guys like Gene Winfield and Jim Bailie, have been using pipes to curve metal for years.

Just about the first thing I would do on a job like that is cover the glass with cardboard or brown wrapping paper…….. it’s just so easy to burn the glass with welding splatter or grinding sparks with that type of work. Don’t ask me how I know . ~ John Buchtenkirch

P.S. Many limos are poorly done. I’ve seen 6 foot stretch jobs with 6 feet of rubber gas lines hanging down underneath without even a single hose clamp to hold them up so the rat’s nest of wires doesn’t even surprise me one bit.

Thanks Mr John, I have made a large cover for the top.

butt welded. some distortion and we dollied much of that out but still ended up skim coating with filler for an economical repair

a day of blocking for each side and then it was primed. a 5ft sanding block worked wonders here!

the other side

re reparing old repairs.

bottom of doors and fenders fixed

outside for a wash before paint prep

I love the view out the front of my shop. i take a small break each evening to pull out a bucket and sit for the sunset.

more slick panels

2 weeks of twelve hour days and even the wife doesnt feel like pictures!!!

painted. the overspray would settle back in the paint and caused the nice orange peel. ick. cant wait for my booth to come in this week!

outside in the sun to cure for a day each side.

woke up early this morning to start buffing. got this far and the owner came by and was so excited to see it so smooth he wants me to shave the holes for the side trim. this means repaint on all the car but the long sides!! but at least im getting paid for it

more buffing

another sun set... another week about to start on this almost finished car..
