Default Yoder power hammer in the UK?

Might be a bit of a long shot but does anyone know if any Yoder power hammers have ever made it to the UK? I fancy having a go at making a copy but would like it to be as close as possible and not having a pattern to work from is going to make it a bit difficult to get started. I have received some initial information from another member on here, about the basics, but I could just do with gathering some further information so that I'm clear in my head the direction I want to take.

Although, I'm not a prolific poster on here, I do like to learn and making machines is a good way to utilise my fabrication shop labour when things get a bit quiet. Also, I'll get a nice hammer to use when I retire

Alternatively, if someone knows the whereabouts of a full set of original Yoder drawings, that would be even better

Thanks in advance.

Yes i have seen a picture of a double sided machine residing in a uk coachbuilders workshop but can't for the life of me remember which one. I would bet the likes of cobham/bae may still have one knocking about or sold some off to small aircraft maintenance companies. There is a lot of US surplus stuff in the uk from the bases they have over here so don't give up hope of finding one....wouldn't surprise me if one turned up for under£500

Martin,

I've only had a brief look at the Mittler brothers kits so I possibly need to take a better look to see what they offer. I do remember seeing Flakey build something but thought he'd bought a Pettingell head and lower arm, then mounted it on his own frame? I'll take another look tonight when I'm at home.

This is what I'd really like to build, if I'm being honest

It might be completely pointless for me to have something such as this but it would be fun to build and would be agood side project for those quiet days!

Gareth,

Yeah that was an awesome build, (sledge hammer and wallnut spring to mind)

You can build your frame in a similar vein, however if I built one I'd have the cam action of the motor at 90 to avoid the sideways sway movement, just a suggestion.

I think it's Petingell hammers that suffer from sway, rather than the Yoder, as they had a much narrower head casting. If back of the head casting (fabrication) occupies as much of the flat area on the pressed channel, I think it will be fine. I'd be aiming to do what Nate did and use 25mm thick pressed channels so the head would be about 18" wide to fit on a 24" wide channel.

Looking at Nate's machine I'd think there was 1-1.5k of material in that before any motors or anvils, I'm guessing 2.5-3k to build a machine like that today, what do you think?

I reckon about £20k, then the anvils on top. The machining alone would be a few thousand because of the size of it. The base plate would be a few hundred and the main column wouldn't be cheap to be pressed. I'm going to get it costed up anyway and will most likely do a build thread if it gets off the ground.

Just checked Mitler Bros.

Complete die set $2850.00
Motor, die holder & pullies etc $2850.00
plus shipping $800.00 (guess)

$1.21/ £1...........£5400

Then build frame, I'd probably go I beam 457x191x98kg = £80 p/m

£800-£1000 materials, plus my fab time

btw if I had 20k (I don't) I'd get a Baleigh p/hammer

There's one post where Nate says that it took around 1500 hrs so even at a tenner an hour we'd be up to £15k.

The point is, I also don't have £20k to spend on a hammer but would be happy to lose that over a two year period if it kept someone in work rather than be kicking their heels waiting for the next job.

Anyway, it's getting a bit off topic now so I could just do with hearing all those great leads as to where in the UK there is a Yoder hammer
