Default A shout out to old timers and or collectors of auto body literature.

At one time I had a drawing in one of my auto body repair books showing the filing patterns on an early fifties car body. I’ve looked for months without any luck and I’d really like to add that drawing to the thread I started several months ago on “how to read body panels”, then that thread would be complete unless someone else thinks of something else to add.

I’m also wondering if anyone might have a copy of the write up on the owner of the Steck company (known for their production of pull-rods) straightens out a rolled over International carry-all type truck. He shows how to use Pull Plates to pull out collision damage, certainly a more effective way to remove collision damage than to hammer & dolly everything, not that it replaces it. Steck’s write up would certainly be helpful for younger guys starting out in the body shop business to give them the idea on how to use their own shop built pull plates and also how to make a decent hourly wage on bigger hits. While not exactly metal shaping we all have run into poorly repaired collision work that has to be corrected at one time or another. I’d like to see that sort of lost information be presented to the next generation of metal aces coming up in the trade. Thanks for helping if you can . ~ John Buchtenkirch

Thanks but I couldn’t get the link to work, even after copying and pasting it. Maybe someone with computer skills better than a dinosaur could help out here. I’d really like to add that drawing and maybe clean up that thread a bit so newer guys could read it and come up closer to speed panels that are giving them trouble. Sometimes a little pointing in the right direction is all a determined person needs. ~ John Buchtenkirch

John, that URL points to a file on YOUR hard drive. You'll need to include it as an attachment or upload into a gallery in order for others to access. If you have trouble with this, you can email it to me and I'll post it.

Maybe John (Oldnek) is referring to this publication from our old Uncle?

http://www.maritime.org/doc/pdf/metal-body-repair.pdf

(The printed page number 44 turns out to be page 50 according to the pdf system)

Yep That's the one. There were lots more and but very similar
I downloaded it a while ago, and saved it, for future reference. That's why my link wouldn't work.

Cheers John

What am I missing here ? I was hoping for a drawing of all the file patterns on a car body, not a written description of how to file a panel. The old drawing was certainly the ah-ha moment for me, that is why I'm looking for it. My late dad always said a drawing or picture is worth a thousand words….. what more can I say ? ~ John Buchtenkirch

Oh WoW! Thanks for that one. One of the best bits of Instruction I've seen lately, for Body work... not Shaping, but returning metal Body work back to it's "proper" shapes. Nice... and Thanks!
