sons school project salt flats racer
A few years back I did a few school projects with my daughter called "hand heart mind" here are the links if you are interested:
http://allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=1426 http://allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=4627 Well my son is at that year in school now and is doing "hand heart mind". He has to have a mentor so he chose me and we shaped a salt flats racer scaled up from a toy car his uncle made for him years ago. Sheet steel is 1mm mild steel shaped over a hammer form, fusion welded with TIG, hammer and dollie welds, file finished and then clear coat to stop rusting. Rubber tyre's are O-ring's and wheels are billet aluminum designed by me and machined at my work on a CNC lathe. Cooper (my son) had a go at everything which is all I can ask for. He loved the band saw but found the hammer and dollie work and TIG torch/cables very heavy and hard on his wrists. We had a great time making the car and he learnt a lot of new things.

Awesome job, and hats off to your son for wanting to do this! Most boys his age don't want to get off the couch. Great learning experience for him, and some good quality time for you!
It amazes me that today's youth just aren't into what we were when we were young. I am in charge of putting on an annual car show at my church, and there isn't one kid interested in helping. Blows me away! When I was young, you were either into cars and something mechanical, or you were out hunting , or both! Video games have screwed this world up.

That's just outstanding! So many kids just sit because no one is willing to take the time to guide them. Great metalwork too.

No, I maintain it's parents who aren't "invested" in raising their kids to successfully compete in society. Not a knock, entirely, on parents, because American schools stopped teaching citizenship in the 50's. We're "reaping what we sowed" by ignoring the impact of social group dynamics on our society. A proper foundation in "citizenship" does much to keep that at bay. Kudo's for showing your son "the ropes" and impacting his confidence and work ethic at an impressionable age! Pretty darn cool -- and glad to see a younger person actually in a shop and learning things and being creative. Good job. Hopefully he is in there more upcoming.
ps: I like that fab table!

Scott,
That's great your teaching and working with your son. The car looks really neat! Whenever I have my grandkids visit I try to get them out in the shop to do a little hands on work. Last time it was my grandson punching louvers in my project car hood. Ron |

Hi Scott,
I love seeing this father and son time in the shop. Bravo. Great experience for that fine young man. Great results on that little car. My own son is now a high-end welder/fabricator with experience in yachts, aerospace, stainless headers, deep ocean robotic power arms, and now diesel hi-performance - because he was brought up working in his dad's shop, and learning the skills of organization, planning, and execution. Again, bravo!
