Next I need to wheel the curve into the new rocker panel. I put the bends in first because they help keep the shape while wheeling the panel but it presents a problem as well. When I need to wheel up to a bend I shim the flattest anvil I have (#6) which moves the contact point with the upper wheel over to the side. I use allen wrenches because they are easy and available in measured increments.
I also use a polyurethane upper wheel to roll a bend in a single plane. I've used the rubber band also but I like the PU wheel. I used the #6 anvil, then the #5 but I still need a little more shape. I'll finish it up tomorrow with a #4.

Looking good Jack. Good idea using the Allen Keys.

I finished shaping the left rocker. I won't cut the relief for the rear fender until I fit the rocker to the car.

Next I removed the old rocker panel. Daaayum! There were spot welds every inch. Every half inch on the ends! I started thinking during the hour that it took to drill them out; it's highly likely that who ever was doing the welding on this car was probably building WWII bombers just a couple years prior to this. It's also probable that that person might have been a woman. Women were doing most of the industrial jobs during the war and developed some skills that would have carried over after the war. Who knows? This car was a Series 62. I noticed that there are a bunch of small holes drilled in the old rocker that appear to be for mounting a trim strip. Any of you Caddy guys know if the stock Series 62 had a trim strip down here?
Anyway, after the panel was off, the inner rocker looks to be in good shape (For 66 years old). I'll clean it up some and coat it with Chassis Saver before installing the outer panel. I'll have to make an extension for the inner rocker to mate to the longer new outer panel.

I've wanted to do a 48-49 fastback Caddy for a long time. With a Hornet motor and a LaSalle box.
These are open invitations to improve the looks.

Enjoying your build. Here is a 49 with lots of trim along the bottom:

I was going to clean up the inner rocker and start fitting and trimming the outer today but I had this small area of the floor that was rusted out. There was about 3" diameter hole so I took out a section about one foot by two feet to make sure I got it all. That's the only rust hole in the floors and trunk and all the floor braces are still clean and strong.

I made a replacement panel and tried to duplicate the ribbed pattern of the original pretty closely then trimmed it up and test fit it to the car. It looks pretty good. I'll get it welded up over the weekend and get back to trimming and finishing the left rocker panel.

I got a little work done today. I finished trimming and cleaning up the inner rocker and test fit the new outer. It's pretty close. A little more finesse work needed to get a good fit.

I made some progress fitting up the left rocker today. There is an outward jog on the last few inches of the innner rocker that needed to be duplicated on the bottom of the outer panel. I just cut a wedge shape out of the bottom, bent it to shape and welded it up. I got a nice fit, good gap, and the curved shape falls in with the quarter and door. I left my hole punch at work so I'll get that tomorrow and prep the panels to be welded up.
