What do you use for patterns?
I would like to know what everyone uses for patterns to re-produce panels?
If the panel has shape I use flexible shape patterns with contour gages with a understanding of in and out of arrangement. If the panel has no shape I will use poster board.

Johnny, I do about the same thing. If the panel has minimal or no shape other than bending I will lay it out on the metal showing all of the bend lines and direction of the bends.

I use the tape patterns if it's anything other than a low crown panel. I don't find them to useful there.
Contour gauges prove very useful as well but admittedly I rarely ever use them. I have shaped to solid bondo bucks before but if there's another way to do it I prefer the "other way". Not that one is better just that I have better luck using other means of gaining panel information. As far as attaining the shape that the pattern shows, I am a huge fan of sharpies. I almost always lay my pattern down, find the low then circle it and take it to the wheel or hammer or whatever the chosen tool may be. It's extremely helpful to me because inevitably I will wheel in the wrong spot and over-raise or shrink whatever the area is that needs work. So a panel I'm shaping will have sharpie circles all over it lol. This is pretty simple knowledge but I thought it was worth mentioning in the context of the question. Take that for what it's worth though, I'm not very good. |

Anyone who has seen the early pictures of my truck project may have noticed the Mountain Dew box i used for a patern. If i dont have any poster board around i will go to the pop case boxes if its a small panel.
I usually use tape also to help get a patern to help figure what size of blank sheet i need.
