I have options ! I never thought I'd find someone who would sell me sheetmetal at a good price. Well I ended up with a Roof panel a 1/4 panel as well as the inner structure pieces.
Its still in "waiting mod" but like to plan ahead.
So I'm almost thinking it would be a good idea to cut and weld in new pieces as I have more time welding sheetmetal than I do working it.
I would think I'd still have to work the dent in order to have it all line up before cutting/welding. shop%20057.jpg
Am I wimping out ?

Not unless you want the education you'd get from fighting the repair more than you want to get the truck done....

I'd do a little thank you dance and put the roof on.

you still need to look closely at the body and see what damage was done below the roof line,
see if the side supports are same side to side, if you have a long profile gauge check side to side on the outer skin too,

do this before cutting the roof off so you will know later what to mess with,

I spend days trying to put a front end sheet metal on a car only to be told later by someone that knew the car that it had been bent bad years ago and fixed on the cheap,
thats why none of the panels lined up with the chassis holes !

But its a neat truck and the doner roof will help,

show us pictures as you go along

Thanks guys ! The old me would have jumped in and been upset about all the problems I'd be finding. Little older now, study first !
Lots more to work out dent wise, plenty of dents to go around.
great tips !

Lightbulb Fixing Roof Dent

The trick is to work from the shallow end of the dent to the deepest end. Try to use off dolly hammerming as much as possible. and lift the damge out. Don't be afraid to use a little heat ot relase the metal. Just enough to burn off the paint will do it. It is repairable it will just take time.

Default Roof Damage

The trick is to work the damage from shallowest end to the deepest. Try touse off dolly hammering as much as possible to lift the damage. Also use a little heat (enough to burn off the paint) to release the metal. When the damage lifts work up the body line at the drip rail. This will give the repair direction. It's repairable it just takes time.

Cut my patch pieces this last weekend (from the spares) I beat on the dent some but ran out of time. It was a slow go with hammer and dolly but I could see some progress. just want it as straight as possible before cutting or maybe I will luck out and it will speed right along needing no patch

Now for the current question How big a hammer should I be using ?

I had a little more work than you do. I moved the major dents out of this with a rubber headed 3# steel hammer, then used a slapper I made from a leaf spring, various shaped dollies and a shrinking disc.

I have about 40hrs in the roof at this point. There are still a few ripples I need to shrink. I think I'd fix the roof you have before I replaced it.

*edit: I know now I should have stopped a little sooner with the rubber hammer and started working the dents with the slapper sooner going from the outer ring toward the center, basically removing the dent in the reverse motion that it was made .
