Hi Shawn,

shape is the stretch or shrink in a panel. arraingement is which way you move the metal to be in the form you want it too be.

one shape can be moved in a number of arraingements.

picture a bowl.
now picture a bowl that has been put over your knee and pushed into a potatoe chip.

these both have the exact same shape (the amount of shrink or stretch, or a combo of both) depending on which arraingement you chose is what form you see it in.

easy

i`ll be at santa cruz if it hasn`t sunk in by then, takes 1 minute once you can see it.

Gary

while i was typing this Johnny posted pics, go back one page

Default fsp

I have made exactly 3 fsp, what I learned is to also make a counter gage to better see exactly how things should form.2 worked as planned 1 was a total disaster. john 's example embedded in shaping a bowl.is a classic.

Michael,

Look at this thread for an explanation and pictorial of shape and arrangement.

I find this thread most interesting the more I read on this site, the sooner I get started the better.

Quick question on FSP. What is the best way of storing them while not in use? It sounds like I could finish up with 1/2 a body shell worth which is a lot of tape.

Keep in mind some shapes, especially panels with reverse curves may not just pop into arrangment easily. Sometimes you have to get them close to arrangment just to keep moving forward.

The inner splash shields I am working on, took heat, clamps, and alot of cussin befoe they made arrangment.

As for storing patterns, I rill them up and place them on top of my sheet metal rack and sharpie the date and what they are for so I dont forget. Some I keep because they are cool, most I doubt ill ever use again.

Thanks Johnny and Gary, that's what I was thinking, but I've never made a piece without keeping it in arrangement so I didn't know it could even be done and thought it must have meant something else.

Sorry if this has been mentioned before but what are your opinions on using vinyl spray paint, this stuff apparently is designed to peel off.
I thought maybe use this with fiberglass mesh and you should have quite a firm external buck???
Not sure if im talking crap but just thought of it. Im sure other have thought of it too.

I think that when you pull it off of the original your trying to copy it might easily distort in a way that would alter the information your trying to capture.

Any change in the pattern that alters the "area information" will result in the problem being transferred to the new part your trying to make.

If you will note I started with "I think" which means that I'm guessing here as I haven't done it, but looking at the video of it being peeled off it looks like it distorts to much to capture information correctly

Having said that, if you have some give it a try and report back I'm always looking for better ways to do things.
