Default 275gtb spyder look-alike volvrarri?

Hi folks,

I believe I introduced myself years ago and alluded to my project. It has been slow going as I have done two other project cars but I am back on this. This is my first attempt at coach building / metalshaping but I have a pretty good all around mechanical, fabrication, and engineering background.

The project started life as an abandoned volvo 1800 I purchased from a metal recycler. This was the perfect donor to create the nart spyder look alike. I am not going for "exact" but very close. The dimensions were similar between the two cars between windshield shape, dash, a- pillars, vent windows, side glass, etc. meaning I could save myself a lot of time. I ended up cutting the volvo in half, stretching it, building a 2x3 frame underneath, mustang 2 front end, electric power steering column, jaguar v12/mustang t5 for the bones. Here are just a few photos to catch you up to speed on all of that...

Now that I am moving on to the body I figured I would start to share my process here, in hopes of gaining some feedback and further support as I pretend to have an idea what I'm doing but definitely do not! My body buck was constructed from a 3d model of a 275gtb coupe (no spyder available) using 1/4" 400 series stainless rod and a 3d printed nose and tail section. Because I used a coupe 3d model it means I will have to "fudge it" for the rear quarters and deck lid which I have been playing with already. The model was sliced into 3d sections and I created a jig with ribs from masonite to form and weld the wire together.

Here is where I currently am, I have jumped into the most important part first I think, the door jambs and frames, as everything else can be built around this. The doors must be built to accomodate the window tracks, glass, etc. I am building all of this in 19ga steel but the body will be skinned in aluminum.

before long I will have to fabricate the door handles. I went ahead and 3d modeled it so that I can print and have a physical part to mock up, but I am not sure if I will be hand fabricating it in aluminum or having it cast? Open to any other suggestions. I do not plan to have it chromed, polished aluminum is preferred.

also looking for simple plunger style locks like this (that aren't ferrari prices)

This is a very nice project as to a trained eye your proportions and contours flow along the originals very well. Kudos!

(I am seeing your size proportions corresponding more to the 250GTB, of which no spyders were made - and only one coupe.)

Great project. You are selling yourself short, as you obviously DO know what you are doing. A star in the making.

Thumbs up

Welcome to All Metal Shaping Spencer!! I'm guessing the activity on the Mad Mechanics forum has been going down. I haven't visited there in quite some time.

I'm glad to see your Ferrari recreation project has been progressing along. It looks like you're making great progress and are at a similar stage on the door frame construction as I'm at with the Miura: https://www.allmetalshaping.com/showthread.php?t=18058

The Miura project went into a slow burn when I moved to AZ about a year ago and have since been focusing on getting a new garage/workshop built. The new garage is close to being ready for move in so hopefully the Miura project will get more attention soon.

I did get my Ferrari 250 GTO recreation out for it's first car show a couple weeks ago. Here's my favorite pic that was taken at the show:

It was also nice to take home the People's Choice award:

It's great to reconnect here.

Great post! It looks like you have the right mentality to building this correctly and locking in the important key details first before building the aluminum skin itself.

I have my own 275GTS/C NART project in queue that is a mix of 275GTB/C, NART spyder and some 250GTO elements. (And a few other minor deviations I'd like.) Most of the CAD work is done based upon 3D scans I did of customer cars years ago that I have permission to use for myself. You are further along than me though -- I'm going to 3D print a large-scale version to "proof the design" in the coming hot days of summer here in Arizona.

note: each NART spyder tail section varies in shape and form given each was hand built by Scaglietti and each was free form created. Some of the versions are better looking than others! Given where you are at so far, I think you will have no issue in creating your own version that will honor the better versions.

This is the rough artwork idea for mine:

Thanks Joel! I have actually been following along on the Miura here, I didn't comment as I wasn't sure if you'd remember me. Love the Miura project and the GTO I'm really glad you're now able to really enjoy it. I can only imagine the crowds that draws!

Thank you! What a cool resto-mod mashup you have designed there! I really like it. I actually had a little 1:24 Revell model scanned but it wasn't actually going to be accurate enough to work off of. My research has led me to the same conclusion about the cam tail on these cars. My printed version does not have enough kick up at the back... too flat. I'm not sure if it's just because of innacuracy in the model or if it's a coupe so I'm actually going to have to revise that area and bring the back of the quarters/trunk lid down so I can accomplish the look I want. I like to be pondering that kind of thing for a little while as I work on other things to come up with the best solution.
