thanks for posting this
I have a couple of students that have enjoyed this thread
they would often ask if any updates have been posted
it has also been very helpful for myself planning a future Merc build

That’s awesome to hear! Hopefully people projects and knowledge of metalshaping will take hold in just a couple of your students! It’s a very fun and rewarding skill that allows a person to think, design and to be creative but most importantly create something with your own hands and mind!

Ok, time to revive this build a little. The ‘49 Merc 4 door into 2 door build is back in the shop. I’m not able to put much time into it each month, but at least it’s getting some attention again (even if slow and little)

Once the “concept” of the 4 door into 2 door 3 window conversion was roughed out and I like how it was going visually…..it’s now time to dig back into it and start refining the project and getting it done properly. To do that….it’s time to get it all to bare metal inside and out so I have a good clean start to build and fabricate from.

Here I had my oldest son trying out the Eastwood contour stripper on the exterior sheet metal (to help save from needing to glass blast it aggressively) after he roughly had the exterior fairly stripped, I pulled the body off the chassis to prep for all the blasting…..

After seeing that trunk, I visualized the perfect car for sneaking your "Crew" into a drive-in movie on a Friday nite to the tune of Elton John's "Saturday Night"

I grew up a "hot-rodder" in SoCal. Gaining an appreciation, through this site, for this genre of automotive expression.

Hey Dane - quite the project!
You like the big panel work. Nice job, and great to see how sweet the flows are happening. Good to have youthful help ...

(Not a 2-door, not a 4-door .... Back when I was a pup apprentice metalman, one of the old metalmen I worked alongside had previously worked on the body-assembly line at Hudson. He welded up a "3-door coupe/sedan" and sent it down along the line to the inspector. "Needless to say," he told me, "my days there were numbered and I was dismissed on Monday morning." )

I agree it’s great to have youthful help but get that young man to at least wear a dust mask, I hate to see him have screwed up lungs like mine are . Breathing rust dust is one of the worst at least for me at this point of my life. ~ John Buchtenkirch

...on safety ...
agree that lung protection is absolutely essential.

Sore lungs = no fun. Blowing rust blobs = less fun. Rusting the bath = Okay.

...and ....
the older guys used to holler at me, my first few weeks on the crew, to: "get your butt-end off the concrete - you'll get hemorrhoids! Get a cushion to park on!"

...welp, none yet ...

Safety First.
