Default metal fab disasters

Ive had this old Austin tourer for repair for a few months. I decided that instead of repairing the original rear wings I would make some new ones since they looked pretty straight forward. I took a tape patern from the best original rear wing and from this cut some steel to suit. The whole job went well and the finnished item looked prety good. On first impression I was happy with what I had turned out , untill I tried to fit it. By comparisons with the original it all looked good, then I tried to fit it.. how could it be so far away from the fit? after tweeking it twisting it and squishing it every which way it still didnt fit, Ive had a similar issue before with paterns make with masking tape where the finnished job appears to be ever so slightly larger than the original piece the patern was lifted from. Took all my will power to stop myself from jumping up and down on the part.. I think I will just cut bits from it and use them to patch up the original, then sell my tools and go live in the wilderness....

Been there... done that...bought the tee shirt.

Got any photos? I suspect what happened is the same thing that happened to me a few times on the roadster. Individual sub panels fit the patterns fine but I welded them together out of arrangement which locked things up.

Hi Ian don’t give up just yet.........
I think your pattern is the problem. Don’t make them out of masking tape use proper paper. It’s called sugar paper. Tape tends to stretch when you pulled off.

Cheers folks... I did think that perhaps the tape did stretch a wee bit when taking it off, but not as much as the part is out...

here are some pictures, unfortunately I didnt take any of the useless fit

OK, looking at the pictures I think I can see exactly what I've done wrong, Looks like ive plannished the weld out on the wrong radius and in the wrong place... the front face is to tall ... No worries the old ones fixed up fine using parts chopped from the new one

Disasters make good posts. I learn more from posts such as this than I do from posts about successes, although I'm as bad as the next guy about only wanting to post the happy stuff.

The original wings patched up fine using cuts from the scrap remake.. managed to get enough sections to repair all the dodgy areas, so all worked out fine in the end, I just need to keep practising

I had to fix the front wings too, this was the worst one. the tail section was replaced along with a sweep close to the mount flange. This was a weird part as it had a reverse curve , but the outer edge was straight! It worked out fine, but these small repair sections are awkward to do in the big E wheel, I ended up tuning the shape with a hammer against a T dolly, stretching from the edge toward the mid section, It welded in fine, all oxy acetylene.

Ive not made a lot of progress with the ghia. Im still collecting panels. I managed to source a nos rear quarter panel for the left side, the plan wih tht being to copy the outer face and make some one piece repair panels... we'll see how that pans out, but for now I cant find the time to work on it, its everyone elses stuff taking precident right now.

Nice work Ian. In building the '36 fenders I learned to finish and weld the peices together on the car. The cars are in a different shop so I winged it on the first pair. I had 2 nice looking fenders that wouldn't fit a car....
