Getting the curl out of grinding discs
Was talking with Cass yesterday and the disscution of getting waves out of grinding discs came up . He asked my approach and he also gave me his solution .
What he does is place them in the microwave for 60 sec. And boom they are restored back to a nice flat disc . My solution doesn't always net perfect results so I will be adopting this method . Thanks again Cass for a simple solution to an oft seen problem .

WOW. That is a great idea. I've got a couple old Mwaves being 'stored' in the shop that will be repurposed shortly.

heat gun
I have used a hair dryer type master heat gun, then let them cool down under a piece of iron.
also some old peel and stick discs to warm up the glue for the table top disc sander.

This has worked for me.
From 1/4" plate make a ping pong paddle shape. Round part about a 1/2" larger than the disks. Punch a 1/2" hole in the center of the circle and a 3/8" hole in the handle end. Plug weld a 3 1/2" piece of 1/2" threaded rod in the center. Next make a circular plate same size. Punch 1/2" hole in center.Weld a 1/2" nut centered on the hole. Weld two 3/16" x 1 1/2" strips on either side of the 1/2" nut to make a giant wing nut. Load up a box full of new discs with a used one on top. Tighten down to straighten the disks out. The discs will acclimate to the humidity in the shop and straighten out. Reload when you get down to about 10 disks and you will always have straight discs to use.

Not sure if we're talking the same discs here but the ones I use are curved like those Pringle crisps when I get them out of the box so I crack them back the other way by hand to get them flat-ish then buzz them against a piece of scrap for a few seconds to warm them through and they go flat as can be and stay that way until it's time to throw them in the trash.

My local welding supply carries the 4-1/2 sanding discs by the "stack". Comes with threaded shank and spring loaded split nut for easy removal, and keeping them stacked and clamped keeps the discs absolutely flat..
