Aout welding with a medical device implant
I just had a spinal cord stimulator installed I'm not getting straight answer from my doctors or from the reps at Medtronic about being able to weld I understand welders have high frequency and magnetic fields and everyone wants to play it safe but I'm hoping someone here may have one also and can answer my question otherwise I my be putting my mig tig and plasma cutter up for sale thank you in advance Ed :mad

Ed, I found this after a google search;
http://www.medtronicneuro.com.au/faq...ation.html#q24 Can I arc weld? It is recommended that the stimulator be turned off and the amplitude set to '0' (if appropriate for the therapy) prior to operating any potentially dangerous equipment. Caution is advised when using arc welders, as they emit large amounts of EMI (see What is EMI/RFI?). It is possible that the magnetic fields generated by arc welding could momentarily induce a voltage into the neurostimulator lead system - and you may feel this as a shock or jolt even when the neurostimulator is turned off.

Wonder if a shielded (and maybe grounded) weldling apron would help. Sort of like the material they use for RFID proof wallets.

Steve i was about to say the same thing - a faraday cage- maybe wear butchers chainmail and attach a ground wire!

If you make a shield out of what's called MuMetal it is really good at shielding the device.
I used it when designing the ground penetrating radar systems if we needed to shield an electronic device and it was very effective. It's a bit expensive but for a small device it is very effective. (Just my thoughts not in any way meant to imply that I'm an "expert" at anything.)

This may be a good reason to go with gas welding.

Everyone thank you so much for all the replies you gave me hope that I can return to my shop ive been fighting with the insurance company for years to get this thing they would rather pump pain meds at you but I finally go my stimulator I just don't want to damage it I can't imagine trying to get them pay for another one anyway thank you so much again Ed. PS if worst can to worst I can still o/a weld so I wouldn't have given up welding all together but there's some thing about tig that is so therapeutic and relaxing
