Default 59 Impala Conv tail rebuild

helping a friend with some rust issues in a 59 impala conv
the car was in very good condition from the doors forward but the rear was in very poor shape
the foil on the frame is to protect the powder coating

we used the replacement floor that is available
it does not come stamped with both indentions for the gas tank strap mount
here is the solution

the drip rail was gone
I had a friend with a CNC bender make up some nice replacements
of course they had to be shaped to fit the contour

both QTRs were removed and the top of the fins separated and the wheel houses were repaired
the available replacement panels were shaped to fit the QTRs

Very cool. Thanks for posting. Is this more school/shop tangent projects or ??

I did chuckle when I saw the aluminum foil on the frame. There were a couple of cars somewhat like that around here years ago. one had aluminum foil glued onto the bumpers and the other on the exposed frame portions in the engine compartment. Guess you could call it like redneck gold leaf. Don't think either experiment lasted much longer than the respective car did...

not a school project just some side work for a friend
and the aluminum foil was the best thing we could come up with to protect the powder coating.

Thanks for posting pics. Taking the quarters off sure makes a lot of difference in how thorough the repair can be. Nice going!

well when you consider that the bottom 3-6 inches of the QTRs needed replaced all I had to do was drill out the welds in the jamb.
The tops of the fins was not as easy. The car owner had a 4 door parts car. That is where the fins tops came from. I will post pics of them when I get them in a little better shape. I grafted the convertible fin tops (section behind the door)to the 4 door fins (rear section)
Also, this 4 door is where the sections of the lower portion of the fins came from
Pieces of the doors were also used from the parts car for other pieces on the fins. They could have been fabbed but they saved some time. We are doing all this with the limited tools we have in the shop. A bench shear,shrinker/stretcher hammer and dollies.

the yellow tape indicates what was replaced
a combination of fabricated/replacement and recycled pieces were used
all were tig welded, and hammer and dolly, then gone over with a shrinking disc
