the prep I use for any bare metal is, sand it ,or ruff it up with a coarse plastic scruffy pad, wipe it down with lacquer thinner,then adhesive cleaner, tac it, then epoxy primer, then do your body work, bondo, glass etc. If you sand through to bare metal, epoxy primer it again. Once your body work is done, scuff it up with a scruffy pad and blow off with air simultaneously to clean it up throughly,wipe with adhesive cleaner, tac and prime with the primer of your liking.
Like it's been said, all welding has it's hassards....common sense, knowledge of potential risks and hazards, proper safety equipment are essential. Our individual body chemistry and how we react to things plus just plain "luck" are also a factor in the mix.....
