Any idea what that thick gray putty stuff is? It looks like just the right stuff. Something to build up a real thick and massive section with that you can beat on.

I BELIEVE that is Dynaglas or other short strand Fiberglas reinforced body putty. Not Kitty Hair the long strand stuff for sure. I've made bondo bucks from it before but not a full surface hammerform.

Here is a link for similar stuff:

Here is a link to a Bondo Buck made from this stuff. It is not a full hard surface but the principal is the same. It's touch stuff and would hold up well for a hammerform. In addition, once made, it could be further reinforced to make it even tougher.

For me, in this particular buck, the hardest part was making the metal structure in such a way as it would come apart without being locked in place.

From the watermark on video and packaging, it looks like that's ebalta resin product. No USA availability listed but there's probably a comparable product available here via Freeman's or a direct industrial source. Pricing on ebalta looks like it starts around $1/lb over in UK and elsewhere where it is available.

And like Kerry says, figuring it your draft to make sure pieces readily disassemble and assemble with minimal seams is a significant challenge. It's like comparing what you alone can do vs 8-10 hands working at once when you're laying molds as they're doing in the video..

Hahaha. Some moderately interesting stuff from time to time Neil - interspersed of course with yards of crap and subliminal suggestions about what I should think.

This post did pique my interest, as foolishly I've allowed myself to be talked into making an Imola style tank for a Ducati that shouldn't wear an Imola style tank. What's worse, my 'friend' (ex-friend?) would like to make a run of them. It started out as most of these things do with beer and him buying a fibreglass dummy shell to widen out to slot over the quite different 900ss trellis frame. My mate and his partner in crime wanted me to make up a dummy steel inner tank which could then have the horrible lop sided glass rubbish (completely different side to side, so a perfect replica) bonded over the top. Yuk!

More beer later, I said 'look I have a stupid idea... Why don't we make a proper alloy one (same profile side to side, so clearly not original...) and then have it 3D scanned. Then we get the guys down the road (who are building DH Mosquito's...) to laminate up a bunch of MDF and CNC router out a 3 piece mould for some flow forming. If the moulds were painted with epoxy resin, they would stand probably 20 or so sides and tops being rattled out into them.'

I know that I'm going to regret this, but this is the plan...

Regrets are unavoidable in life. It's funny how often Ducatis and beer get tangled up in just such situations, at least in my life.....

If you're going the computer scanning route anyways, what about marrying scans of the Imola top and the trellis underside necessities so you can do the rendering & modifications in the computer for a perfect fit buck/part the first time? From what I understand, that's the big plus of using the technology.

I would like to see how your project goes. My Saturday afternoon was spent with a 1981 900SSD, taking pics & talking differences between earlier plain frames, it and later trellis frames. Along with one remaining Ducati project here, I have similar ambitions to adapt an original XR750TT tank (top) fabbed in alloy to a plain Sportster street frame without joining the endless masses of bad cafe sportster builds or fake tank bikes out there.

regrets can't be far behind for either one of us.

Interesting.
I just went to look at this again and it says the link has expired. Any chance you could find a new link for me please? I was telling someone at work about it and want to send him a link to it.
