We used to have saddle horses and everytime they were reshod the farrier would clinch the nails with a tool that looked exactly like the one in the photo. I personally have not shod horses but I have trimmed thier hooves using a trimming plier that was very similiar to that tool also. I guess some tool designs are pretty much universal. Dave.

They look similar to Coving pliers, back in the day where you had Decorative Aluminium ceiling panels, and cornice panelling. They where used when you wanted a cove, put around the edges of the panels, or cornice.

Having shod a few thousand horses in my time, the ones we use here at least have teeth to grab the nail to pull it over. Used to call them alligator pliers. They were a lot narrower than those pictured too.
