are there other time honoured methods of rod wrangling?

Bend over knee
Bend over gas bottle
Bend over corner of bench etc...

Any pearls of wisdom on wireframe bucks gratefully received.

Thanks.
I had the same question and like you found bugger-all on the net.

I have curved 6mm rod across two open vice jaws, tapping in the centre with a heavy hammer; the risk may be cracking the vice!

Two bits of round bar, about 25mm diameter, welded to a plate and set on the anvil would be just as useful and indestructible.

Some sheet metal rolls have grooves machined in the end – probably to accommodate a wired-edge – a large enough set would handle 6mm bar.

Nice to see you are back ,

Cheers Charlie

Hi
Years ago I worked in a Fruit Cannery and I used make can sweeps and twists to turn full and empty cans upside down so the labels could go on the right way.

These sweeps were mainly made out of 5/16" stainless rod and bent into shape with bending dogs "been looking in the shed for one for a photo"

These bending dogs were easy make, a piece of 1.1/2" x 5/8" Flat 2" long, with a 5/16" clearance slot cut in it 3/4" long and 1/2" dia handle 14" long welded on.
Bugger a drawing would be easy

Sorry you're having a crap year. Though the motorcycling must be fun. I haven't built a wireframe buck, but am in the process of planning one. I was going to use a ring roller to get nice even constant radius curves. I am working from coordinates measured from a car, so would draw the required shape on paper, then bend the rod and lay it on the paper till it matched the drawn profile. I was thinking that bending over the knee, or similar would be hard to keep a constant radius on a large sweep.

Cheers
Dave

Thanks Charlie - yeah I have 4' x 3" roller with wire groves, so could roll a bunch of rods with similar sweeps, mark a centreline and then crank the tops over to follow the correct rising and falling side profile - not dissimilar to the MDF process outlined by my God buddy. The parallel rods or a facsimile Eastwood thingy would enable tweaking.

Been a tough year for sure. Focus on Barbara getting well again and the house sorted, the 6 Series back on the road and a couple of Group A Eggenberger Volvo fuel pump brackets recreated for a buddy. Mate they will be easy he said... Then the Group 5 wireframe and panels

Thanks Dave - yes the 749 is a pile of fun, as is the gang of geriatric reprobates that I have joined. Trouble with this one is that we don't have an existing shape to copy and some of the shapes we need for the front end are different to all of the original factory ones because of the wheel diameter we are using. Once I get started I'll post some pictures of the good the bad and the ugly results.

Default Easing into the wireframe idea...

Struggling to come up with some creative ideas for presents for my two boys this Christmas and thought that I would ease my way into the wireframe buck for the Group 5 E21...

Eldest has forsaken his two degrees in computer programming and is working 60 hours per week as a slave for McDonald's money at the local Ferrari dealership. Job title is 'Showroom Groomer' but has already sold several cars, the customers love him and there is the 'car dealer promise' of a sales role next year. Youngest is battling through the final year of his Mechanical Engineering degree, but his first love is music. Specifically the guitar, Hendrix and all my old 'classical' LP's - Floyd, Stones, Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc... And he happens to be a 'lefty'.

So with some 1.6mm tig rods, a bit of .09mm mig wire, several hours with pliers, bits of shafting off-cuts as mandrels and a bunch of soldering, I have a sort of 250GTO and left hand Fender Stratocaster.

Sure would have been easier to buy some book vouchers...
