FYI, you have a special power steering system because of the hydraulic fan found in some of the Jeeps. You will need to use the special clear hydraulic fluid to fill the system (only available from Mopar) and you'll also need a vacuum pump adapter for the reservoir cover.

(The TSB's contradict each other ofcourse...get the clear fluid which will probably be identified on the reservoir.)
Regards, Steve

Thank you David.

Steve, In my other Jeeps I have only run the Mopar fluid as had trouble the moment I used another compatible one, so just stick to the dealer ones now.

Question on fixing the bonnet supports for the skin. It only had one at the cowl end and another at the grille. At the cowl end I was surprised to find factory spot welds directly to the skin itself. It had 6 spot welds joining the hat channel flange where the original hinges attached underneath, not like they are now, and had more directly holding the ends of the support to the skin, not the flange. I would have thought this would make the spot welds show during expansion and contraction, and it might have as I never had this nice and shiny to notice or was one ever driven by me.

The spot welds were through the flanges around where the captive nuts for the hinges are at the rear of this photo. One of the other bonnets also had each side of the centre as well.

Thinking I might just add them under the new hinges so it cannot be seen and then attached to the flanges of the bonnet edges instead. Or would the factory way not be a problem?

Might also look into additional one or two supports to go between the front and rear supports if needed on the wider bonnet. Maybe inline with the hinges parallel to the crease each side?

Marcus that hood is a work of art!
The whole front end is well proportioned, could be a prototype for the 2022 retro version Jeep.
Maybe you could sell Chrysler the plans.

Thanks for sharing,

Steve

Not much to show but a lot of time spent still.

Bonnet skin is complete! Laid it next to my spare stock one to give you an idea of proportions and size change. I kept the best bonnet to start with in case I needed pieces from it if I failed in making the skin. Might sell the original one now or think it would make a good awning over my garage side door too!

I cleaned the metal surface with a finer strip disc so I could better check the surface for imperfections.

This is about as far as I can go until the supports go in to hold its final shape. I don't have any 'loose' areas as is as tighten them up with the shrinking disc even if the shape was already correct.

That looks really great, Marcus.

This skin will now be attached over the inner hood show in your last post with folded flange or similar, correct? I've been scrolling back through the thread to see how it was disassembled but haven't found that yet.

Beautiful work Marcus. I'd sell the original hood to someone who needs it. You can produce the awning wider (2m) even with the same style front-end Jeep mask with a good design. From material inox or rust - modern style.

For shape control, I use a grid for plasterboard. It will show you inequalities and you can make it into a high quality sheet metal surface.

Great job on the hood, Marcus. I know that one was making you a little nervous.

No these were spot welded directly to the support! I'll show you in the next update but had 26 spot welds holding it. I wont be doing it that way though as they do show up under a good paint job.

Most certainly it was. Been worried about since the day I started this build hoping my skills would be up to it by the time I had to do it!
