Gauge Sheet metal
I have a 69 camaro I am trying to rebuild. What gauge sheet metal should I be using for patching and replacing the body; quarters and fenders, ect. Also do I use a heavier gauge sheet metal for the floor?
I have a few big 18g sheets laying around just don't want to waste them by trying to shape them if there to thick to work. |

18GA isnt too thick to work, but 19 GA is that much easier to shape, and welding different thickness together can be a royal pain. Mic your original panels, and get as close as you can to that. A few thou can make all the difference in the world.
Talk to your supplier too, I have seen thm run both on the high and low side of tolerances, meaning that a certian suppliers 18 GA will be closer than thier 19, so on and so forth. A good salesman knows what side of the tolerance they run. for floors, I use primrially 18 ga and save the 19 for when it is needed. I also ought to have 20 on hand for those few times that something I am working on is that thin. Marty Marty

Marty is right on (as usual) sand off the paint adjacent to your weld and mic the metal.
