D&S convertible
I have always loved 356 Porsches but no matter how good I've been all year, come Christmas and I have never found one under the tree
Thought I'd take matters into my own hands after see pic of a coachbuilt Dannenhauer and Stauss that was built in Belgium (?) Apparently the guy restored a genuine one and was allowed to take patterns to build one for himself D S Belgium.jpg Dannenhauer-Stauss-1951.jpg this car was restored by West Coast Classics from memory Mine will be a loose interpretation with a bit of artistic licence I tried to visualise making a buck but that got distracted and built a door instead 783 30.jpg Edges were formed over MDF sheet . I tried a bit of torch shrinking. Probably went a little heavy in places ! Stretch 'em back 784 30.jpg created a step, drilled and plug welded 786 30.jpg wrapped a bit of steel over the flange to try out the skinning process 781 30.jpg I used mdf to indent the striker plate area only to realise its a suicide door so this is the hinge end . Darn ! 782 30.jpg I don't like the straight internal edge as it just doesn't seem to match the graceful ( to me) flow of the car but will run with it for now as I am really enjoying just doing something with tin Cheers john

Hi John
Looks good so far. The hidden dak-dak parts scattered around your shed will come in handy for this build. The welding has improved. This will keep us busy at MM in december. Regards Dennis

I posted some pics in the welding section which may be better to view the stunning workmanship rather than the phone pic !! Will I put you down for the windshield frame as you did a pretty damn good job on your cowl vent ? Hey while your at it why not do some "Crotch coolers " on the D&S ? They are just cowl vents placed vertically on the rear of front guards. Early split VWs had them. One each side will do the trick. Even just one on the drivers side would be cool and a semaphore on the left rear quarter just behind the door post (Told you I would be taking the mickey ) There's only a handful of these things left on our planet so the purists would have a field day ! I'll leave that in your capable hands..... Johnny

The belguim replica had pretty straight lines but in a few pictures of genuine cars I found there appears to be a slight curve. Nowhere anything like Neil's 356 but definetly not straight as I have done At this stage I will keep going as I don't want to get mired in detail. All I want to do is put something together to shut Dennis & Johnny up ! Cheers John
