Really nice job Rob!

I really enjoy your precise descriptions and your willingness to share all of the techniques you use,

Cheers Charlie

Big jump all of a sudden to see paint on it. Always a great point in the build even if only the epoxy coat.

Sorry Will, missed your question. Really pleased with the wheel, even the limited amount I've used it thus far. Something I've noticed is that one of the inherent issues with the fabricated wheels seems to have disappeared with the cast machine. My fabricated wheel, once pressure was applied, seemed to slam the wheels together when the work piece was removed. This effect can also be seen in Jacob's recent video. It appears the "springy" nature of the fabricated steel, in providing some dampening, results in a rebound once the panel is pulled from between the anvil/wheel. In using the cast wheel, even though there is a slight give until the crystalline composition of the casting locks, there does not appear to be any rebound, or release of energy once the panel is removed. I have yet to experience the anvil/wheel slamming together. Discussion with another member here (much more fluent in wheeling than myself) seems to conclude that the springy nature of the steel causes a constant pressure in a fabricated wheel, resulting in constant stretching, whether you have a high or a low in the panel (thinned or thick areas). So the theory of "pressure wheeling" in this case would appear to be non selective in what it stretches, it's going to stretch everything. Given the cast does not rebound, it appears to lock in at a certain width or clearance between the anvil/wheel, where once dialed in, you will stretch any thick areas and glance over the thin ones, to yield a more consistent panel thickness throughout. Perhaps this may be why panels seem to "wheel up" much more quickly and accurately.

For the cost involved, this is a no-brainer, if you can afford one of Peter's cast machines, you should be all over it. What I've seen thus far is night and day difference as compared to the fabricated wheel. Can't wait to use it more. Dang paint jobs in the way...

That is a great observation on the difference in the wheels. I had not thought of before. Make sense when you think about it.

Sure looks nice.
Great to see the shiny black all over ...

Magnets: will yank plasma and TIG arcs, so have to watch out.... also, having the plasma cut close to the ground connect will destabilize the arc - and it can go horizontal across the surface....!

Wheel frame design - I tend to see steel/iron differences as "stored energy" - like tennis ball vs superball.....? Higher stored energy releases more.....?

Sorry to pop up an old thread but as this post is not metalshaping per se, and more of a follow up to metalshaping, thought I'd post it here.

Richard and Brandon Glymph got some green sprayed yesterday, the project is starting to take shape...
