Fabrication of 7 complete hoods for T57 Bugatti and designing a louvre press
I need to fabricate a complete hood for an original T57 I am restoring and also need to build 6 more for the recreations I am building. Will Cronkrite offered to help design and make some drawings for a custom louver press. Each side panel will have 80, 3" louvers in three rows with spaces for hood hardware. They will be 1/4" apart and the rows will be spaced at 3/4. That means there will be 1120 louvers. The original car I am working on was purchased in AU and the photos send to us showed the hood as described above however when the car was delivered by the broker it had a completely different hood which was off and earlier car, so I am building a hood from the photo taken in AU. The side hood panel is 54" long and running three rows with the close spacing means that if they are not accurate the it will look terrible therefore an accurate fencing and registering system would be necessary.

Nice machine and awesome work. The only question I have is do you have a pic of the punch to go with the die. I would like to see how you get the nice clean cuts. The one I made distorts the edges a bit and need a little hammer work before that are finished. Not working on a classic like that but still like to learn when ever possible.

Close-up of dies and top panels
The press is powered by an electric over hydraulic pump from my old frame rack which can run 4 10 ton rams. It has a 5" stroke and has a manual release or automatic release. I use the automatic so when I hear it punch through I just release the button. I have a piece of rubber in the female die to limit the depth of the male die. I am using the top guide from Hoosier Profile English wheel to make the dies fit with a close tolerance. The step in the top of hood to allow the hinge was put in with a Delron die on the Pullmax. After making the paper pattern for the top panel I laid it out on the sheet of aluminum and allowed 1/2" more material at both ends and at the center hinge point. This is partly because one side of the old hood tops is 5/8" longer than the other side. By allowing the center of the hood longer I can cut it to fit once the sides are fitted. The dies for the step on the hood was made in Delron however after running a few practice runs I had to make the bottom die in aluminum so the line would be sharp.
