I'd like to know if that is a standard Austin 7 Front Axle ?
Looks like a unique way to a drop an axle !

Hi Tom. Sorry I'm not really sure - I know it has been widened and lightened and think that something has been turned over? I know the regs of the day required that the original rails and axles were retained, albeit that the axles could be shortened or lengthened. The diff head is massively offset to get the driveshaft down beside the driver's left leg and the engine skewed to help with the same. Bill Longyard may want to chime is as a previous Austin 7 special owner.

The phone stopped ringing mid afternoon today, so snuck out to pay a visit to my buddy Mike. He has so much work that he is turning stuff away - latest was shaping some aerospace rocket thing from something harder than inconel... What he did have on the bench though were some exhaust shrouds for another local DH Mosquito rebuild/recreation, an MDF press tool/hammerform for some more Mosquito bits, a bunch of F5000 wings bits and shortly a March F2 car (BMW M12 engine ) coming in for a full fettle. In the meantime however he has found a bit of time to make a start on the panels for the Austin 7 Special. Progress shots below.

Austin 7 Special - not my work

Hi Scott - I'll see what I can do when I next visit Mike. I try to restrict my visiting as it interrupts his work and he is literally snowed - probably 2 years work or more ahead of him. Aside from his Warbird work from Ardmore (I think mainly AvSpecs) he has a local Jay Leno type with a vast collection of quite serious stuff, who keeps him constantly supplied with car, bike and architectural work. Check out Mike's Facebook page under Hammer Works.
John - pretty sure those are just music CD's. Mike has an ear issue and is quite deaf. He works from home in a sparsely equipped basement workshop (I feel guilty at the amount of space and gear that I have by comparison) and plays music CD's rather than the radio. I have to stand outside the door and send him a text when I arrive as banging on the door does nothing.

Thanks Richard.
In my previous reply I neglected to mention nice work on the buck and the panels.

Thanks John - I'll pass that on. He is a clever boy and thoroughly nice chap to boot, a constant source of local inspiration for me. Happily I now have a couple of bits of gear that he doesn't have and sometimes needs, so a chance to try and even the score.

New small Wheeling machine
Called around to see Mike today to check progress on his Austin 7. Lots of customer work getting in the way, but he has managed to get a bit more done on his small wheeling machine for the Austin 7 Special. Upper and anvils are a cheap H/F or Eastwood set which he recently brought back from the US in his Pickup (a whole 'nuther epic build) which you could not make yourself for the same price. Style and welding is impeccable as usual! Frame is 5.0 or 6.0mm which he had water-jetted or lasered.

Had to go and seek some panel forming advice from my buddy Mike Roberts today and amongst his restoration work on a Ferrari and fabrication of various warbids bits, he has found some time to finish his small wheeling machine and make some more panels for his Austin 7 Special.
The welds are as welded with a couple of passes through the wheel. The wheels for the small wheeling machine are Harbour Freight items which Mike picked up on his last trip to the US. He has cleaned them up in his lathe and converted a neoprene tyred caster wheel for a rubber upper. Post is some scrap CrMo, side plates are 6.0mm and adjuster is a piece of 20mm screwed rod. God I just hate him... 20160121_122533.jpg 20160121_122549.jpg 20160121_122603.jpg 20160121_122618.jpg 20160121_123032.jpg 20160121_123823.jpg 20160121_123828.jpg
