Trouble-shoot this? (AGW)
For you aluminum gas welding (AGW) folks:
I just got this little problem to solve, and thought to give this audience a shot, for practice. Diagnose the problem shown here, with this weld: 18136267_1558687647507243_222070092_n.jpg top 18142816_1558687680840573_119433067_n.jpg root

Looks like it was the incorrect filler rod for the job as the weld pool appears full of contamination. If it was a TIG weld, you'd think it had been starved of argon as the weld is that dirty.
How many guesses do we get before you reveal the answer?

I don't know the answer, but i think this is a GOOD idea. Could you give us a little more info, what welding process and filler rod? Thanx for the large, clear images.

This if fun Kent, and I don't mind looking like a fool.

Kent, good game, with a serious purpose, I'll guess old flux or mixed with contaminated water.

Looks like the flux is contaminated, or the wrong flux.

Looks like some of my crappier fast gas welds (usually on old repurposed steel) with too much heat on unclean parts that are too cool to be welded properly and too much filler (because it's easier to melt), with bubbles from the boiling overheated puddle. When the fit-up is not tight, the backside shows a better quality bead than the top, sorta like I achieved ok penetration. But maybe that's not what I'm doing wrong.
