Default Frame Stiffness calculator

I can't seem to find the frame stiffness calculator. I thought it was posted???

Or has Richard Ferguson's spreadsheet been posted??? (Kerry talked about it in his build diary.)

Working on my "group build" shrinker. I have a bunch of 5"x7"x1/4" tubing. I can run the tube 7" on the vertical because the pillow blocks I bought are tapped (no ears). Just need to know how deep of throat I can build.

Also, I know that everyone seems to just stack their tubing at 90 degrees (except for the lower tool holder). What about a C-frame like most top-adjusting E-Wheels?? It would be for no other reason than to match my E-Wheel frame . My wheel frame is 26" throat but I really can't see the need to build a thumbnail shrinker that big... or can I???

In my opinion 10" is already too much, I dont think I ever remember using it all or wishing I had more. I have gone that deep on the Yoder though...

You really can't use thumbnails much over 6-8 inches in. At least I've never been successful. 5x7 will do a 10-11 inch throat fine. You could make it in a C shape but it's harder to deal with the motor mounting and with such a small throat it's just not worth it imo.

I'll look for the calculator.

I guess I was thinking of copying the shape and tubing of my E-wheel just so the machines look similar.

I used this drawing (I think it's one of Anders drawings but apologize to the artist if I am wrong.)

I'm not sure how that would look shrunk down to <12" of depth.......

That would be it! Thanks!!!!

Edit: That is the spreadsheet but it's a Read-Only spreadsheet. I thought there was one posted that a guy could enter their tubing and frame size to calculate stiffness. Then it could be compared to other wheels.

You should be able to use "Save As" to save it after editing. At least it worked that way on my PC........Bill

OK, now that the computer user issues are resolved

A 12" throat (and I know I can't shrink in that deep with thumbnails) with 5x7 tubing is 297.8 Vertical and 175.7 Horizontal. Beyond stiff if 200 was the original "target" in the group build.

(my E-wheel frame came in with 29.3 Vertical and 17.3 Horizontal. Yeah!!)

I did a quick scale drawing of it.... with the big box and small throat it looks really stupid. Oh well. Maybe once the equipment is all painted the same they will look "right".

As you say, the metal doesn't care what the tool looks like! (paraphrasing)
