I said I would show some of the work we did to this car here at Classic Metal Shaping. I cant say to much about the origins of this car but this is what we started with...
The body of this car was very corroded and full of filler. We ended up making large areas of the metalwork. I never cut out any metal untill I have a new piece to replace it. I should say at this point that the work done on this car was done between James and I. James did the bulk of the work with design and a helping hand from me. You can see in the photo above how poorly the door fits! The body had sagged due to the rot!. David

We copied the original panel for this section. I always try to brake panels down into sections that are easy to work but at the same time any joints should not cause distortion that would be hard to lose. For example I try never to join across very flat sections. It is better to replace some sound metal and put the joint in an area that will not distort enough to cause problems or extra work.
. The joint between the radiator shroud and the side panel is as it was originaly. David

In the photo above you can see that the bukhead (firewall) had been butchered. we made up a new bulkhead and plug welded and spot welded it in place.
Also in the photo above the front section of the inner wing has been added. David

David, i myself own your dvd, and of course im really glad that i bought it in first place,the way you master the technics and your aproach to the job is amazing it makes it look all easy. Anyway, i would like to comment on the pictures of your work, but... whatever i might say, it as been already said 100 times, so i will keep it simple: FANTASTIC!!!
I hope one day i have people admiring my work the way i admire yours, then i will know i have achieved something. take care

David, as usual I am amazed not only at the quality of your work and techniques, but feel so grateful that you and the many other talented craftsman on this sight take the time to share you knowledge. Many craftsmen choose to keep their "secrets" to themselves. Thank you.
I have noticed that you do not often post bucks and flexible shape patterns that guide your work. How, and when (if ever) do you use these?

Hello Byron, I try not to make too many bucks. I dont use FSPs. I have to produce this stuff at a rate that people will pay for so unless I am going to make more than one of a part or it is very complicated I will only make a very simple buck if at all. I will post some photos of some of my patterns and bucks when I get a chance.

Why is it that every time I look at a thread like this one (especially any of yours David), I get butterflies in my stomach!!!
I can't find any books that show the basic steps of building a car onto a chassis with either a wooden or metal frame clothed in metal. The threads on this site go some way to show what's involved. Maybe it's something for you to consider when you finish your 2nd video. I'm sure there are others that would second the idea |
