Santa brought me a package from Bob Adame today. In it was this work of machinists art!
Tool-exchange-2010-001s.jpg The heads screw off and attach to the paddle and can be used as a post dolly. Tool-exchange-2010-002s.jpg Exceptionally well made. Looking forward to using it. Thanks Bob!

I recieved my gift from Kerry a couple of days ago. Thanks Kerry. He gave me a nice turned oak mallot, a sweet little curved riffler and a copy of his classic "Metalshaping 101".
I don't know about that hammer Kerry. It's a first article prototype and it is completely untested. You may eventually wind up cussing it. You can change the balance and the reach by repositioning the handle along the hammer head holder. If it turns out to be unuseable, it might be useful to throw at a rat. |

I received some really cool tools from Rick today(HEATNBEAT). I have been needing some wire edging tools and now I have my own set. I also received a really neat copper backing tool for welding.
Very useful tools Rick Thank you very much. I had a lot of fun with this tool exchange, I think we might have to make it a allmetalshaping tradition BBQ 189.jpg BBQ 190.jpg

Bob, the mallet is called a Blodger and, once you've used it a few times, it will become one of your favorite tools...especially for aluminum.

I knew it had a specific name but I couldn't remember what it was. I was thinking froe but it turns out that you hit a froe with a blodger.

Bob What is the weight of this hammer?
Also I know the holes are there to tighten it up but i notice the large side the holes are much larger, was that done for balance? That hammer is a piece of art I would love to try it. This hammer is solid gold you will love it

I don't know the weight of the hammer. I drilled the large holes to take some weight out of the head. I think that it is not so easy to make a nicely balanced hammer. The weight of the handle vs the weight of the head is probably important. The hammer I made is a bit heavy at the handle end. Also the 3/4" diameter rod is not stiff enough. It probably should have been 1" dia tube, maybe 14 gage wall. This would have made a stiffer and lighter handle I think.
It's hard to beat hickory for strength to weight. |
