One of the more memorable moments.
This seems to have left a more favorable impression on Peter than on me, but this is photographic proof of the time he scared the sh......t out of me.
I was walking away from showing Jim Hery about a concern that I had about a small high spot in the tail section, and was walking away when I heard Peter ask for a torch. A torch???????. I turned back around and this is what I saw! This is also how Peter lights his cigarettes.

There is a very funny story about this particular exercise on Will's speedster tail
Let me tell why Will face immediately went green This is what happened........................... after the first annealing I left some water on the tail ,so when I put the second coat of soot (the black guide formed by the acetylene) the soot did not stick to the panel, so I simply said ''HOOPS'' well you should have seen Will face ............................ Peter

Assorted mechanical details for the speedster
Finished going thru the many pics of this build to gather photos for a magazine article and set aside a few of the non-metal shaping segments of this restoration. I started with a very nice and straight Model A frame. The motor was 'refreshed' by a long time Model A builder motor builder. I straightened and restored the front axle, rebuilt the clutch assembly and rebuilt the rear end housing assembly. I restored the backing plates and assembled all original brake components, rebuilt the steering box. I had a 'same as' or NOS original '31 radiator and made a jack shaft to lower the fan to be behind the center of the radiator. New brake rods were used and re-fit all the clevis pins, along with era correct friction brakes and the I used original splash apron brackets for step plates that used Model A rumble seat steps. The tires are used with new tubes and hardware as I was looking for a more 'racy' tread pattern, particularly on the rear. I rebuilt the transmission as well as the shift tower assembly and all the hardware was either cad or nickel plated as original. The intake and exhaust manifolds were hand built and the carburetors were restored using original NOS jets and were dyno tested to be within 1/2 horse power of each other. I went to this effort to minimize the effects of using the balance tube. The carb's are linked together for acceleration and also for the choke actuator. The high speed gas adjustors have to be set individually, but I made short 'knobbed' adjustors to facilitate this. One of the pictures shows the fuel line shut off valve at the right of the drivers knee.

One Sunday Morning in the Carolina's
Emptied the shop this morning to 'test drive' the speedster and make a well needed sweeping of the floor. These pics show my last three build projects, probably the last big car builds for awhile. The speedster started up right away and I quickly got it outside to see daylight for the first time. It idles about 200 RPM too high, needs to have the timing retarded about 2-degrees, the brakes need to be tightened and the clutch needs to engage about 1" sooner on the pedal travel, but overall I am very happy with how it turned out.

That's an impressive fleet, Will, and an impressive achievement too!
There's a chap near me with a stretched Humvee limousine. The old roads over here aren't made for such big vehicles, and he has to do something like a 36 point turn to get in and out of his driveway |

I was always impressed with the incredible amount of time and effort that went into the speedster build. It turned out great, let me know if you need it road tested.
