I did this awhile ago but I thought some might be interested A friend has a Glass Air, home built plane. He needed a control console. We are both into street rods,so he told me he wanted it to look like a street rod in the air There are 3 levers and a locking lever that holds the 3 in position.I cut the handles on my Bridgeport with an index that is connected to the handle with a gear. so when I turn the handle to move the table in the X direction the indexer rotates I used a .25 ball mill to cut the groves.I machined the groves to line up with the next handle. they will have a color code painted in the groves (red, blue, and I think black?) he is going to do that. the top of the body was rolled to the configuration then I embossed the edge. I cut the sides and welded them at the edge inside and out. sanded and polished then he cut the top to fit the plane. I drilled a hole at the end of each slot and just used a thin cut off wheel and cut out the center.I drilled the handles to lighten them up and TO LOOK LIKE A STREETROD I had to machine some linkage under the cover to make the handles do what they are suppose to do(can't see) It was alot of work but I think it was worth the effort. I did't tell him what I was going to do. He was very happy with the results Attachment: deep throat bead roller 110.jpg [ 105.51 KB | Viewed 137 times ] Attachment: deep throat bead roller 107.jpg [ 110.46 KB | Viewed 137 times ] Attachment: deep throat bead roller 113.jpg [ 105.56 KB | Viewed 136 times ] Attachment: deep throat bead roller 117.jpg [ 83.8 KB | Viewed 134 times ] Attachment: MM 08 282.jpg [ 105.56 KB | Viewed 133 times ] _________________ the second mouse gets the cheese Rick Scott Kerry Pinkerton Post subject: Re: air plane control console Posted: Thu Apr 16, 2009 6:01 pm Joined: Fri Mar 13, 2009 10:38 pm Posts: 247 Location: Harvest, Al I'd forgotten that Rick. Although it looks beautiful it still bothers me a bit that the knobs on top are not the right shape. The idea is you should be able to tell the control quadrant even in the dark with the cockpit filled with smoke, The far left throttle round smooth black, the center 3 scallops (bumps) on top Blue, Far right mixture control/fuel shut off scallops around the entire knob RED. The idea is to give yourself as many ways to identify the control as possible to avoid accidental mix-ups. Believe me the LAST thing you want to do after flying all day in or around weather is have to think about how to fly the airplane, imagine pulling the throttle back to idle when starting a decent into the traffic pattern only to have the engine quit because you accidently pulled out the mixture control by mistake due to fatigue . Not a good way to end your trip. Sorry but being a pilot and and flight instructor, safety in the air is always first looks second. But.... it is a Beautiful quadrant, and I'd love to see pics of it installed. _________________ CJ Dansie |
