Default Leather for sand bag ?

How thick is the leather you use for a bag?I bought some cheap but it seams to be to thick and stiff (5 oz. 1/8 thick). Will it loosen up after use like a ball glove or get something else?

Personally, I use old purses from church sales, get them on the last day, never pay more than a dollar. Always loads to choose from. I pick the ones with the thickest leather, and that seem to be the easiest to sew the opening shut. My son used an old tool belt pouch with good results. Not the longest lasting tools around, but then they are very easy to replace. Allows me to have different sizes extremely economically. You can also experiment and compare different sand fills this way.

I just made one with leather just under 2mm. It was very soft and flexable to start. Google softening leather. There are lots of oils and conditioners that people use on leather to soften it up.

I used suede. I copied that idea of Wray Schelin (http://stores.ebay.nl/Pro-Shaper-Tools-and-Videos). Flexible to begin with and the metal has less tendency to slip away. About 2 mm thickness. Bought it on the internet, the woman designed and made purses and had left overs. Bought is for about 10 euro.

This is the bag (empty):

How much are you guys spending on the leather you are buying? Bags are available at a number of sources for $25-35 in the 12" range, is it even worth building your own? The commercial ones available are very nice. I had a dagger tools bag that is suede, it only costs about $30, and it is premade and will last a lifetime if properly taken care of.
