Hi Bob, we used polyurethane glue. It stated on the tube that it was stronger that the wood itself so we thought we would put that to the test and in fact the wood broke before the glue.

Default modern wood glue

We have used the West System, a marine epoxy for 30 yrs.
The modern glues are extremely strong and durable.

.................................................. .................................................. ..............Like I said earlier we discovered that the back part of the body was completely out of square. We worked out that several parts of the body frame were not the same one side as the other. We rectified all the issues by replacing several sections with new wood. These were parts that had been replaced at the time the frame was 'restored'. One of the ' B' posts for example was three quarters of an inch shorter than the other one. As I say we replaced several sections to make the ash frame symmetrical.

Once the frame was sorted out I set about making a set of bucks for the wings.
I was supplied with a set of original wings (fenders). I also had an original rear wing from another car which gave me something else to cross reference to.

The original wings were not that bad considering their age.

I fitted all the wings to the ash frame and rolling chassis to check the fit and shape of the the wings.

Hi Richard. Sorry no. There is little information. A lot of the cars I looked at on the internet while building this car have wings that are the wrong shape and petrol tanks that don't have the correct details. As the tank is such a feature on these cars it's a shame. There were only ever 314 of these made. Production stopped because of the war. A car with similar history to this one was restored at a company about 30 miles from here and later sold for a million US dollars.

I spent a fair bit of time making the wings on one side of the car fit and flow properly. I used period photo's to check the shape in great detail to ensure I made bucks from the most accurate wing shape possible. The chances of getting an original car with original wings and original ash frame again are slim to none.

Once I was happy that I had them right I began to make the bucks...

If I might add a little technique I use for sizing off a photo.

Best on a side view.
Pick a known item like a wire wheel. Measure with a digital caliper
Say you know that wheel is 15" and it measures 2" by the caliper.
That means a caliper inch off that picture is equal to 7.5"
If somewhere else measures .75 by caliper ( .75 x 7.5 = 5.63" )
A .5 caliper measured item x the 7.5 photo factor equals 3.75" for that item.
Since.5 equals 3.75" and there are four .5 in 2". Four x 3.75 is 15.
The scale proves out and anything you measure by caliper on that photo x 7.5 should give you some close dimensions.

Watching this thread closely. Did you make the buck so you could repo more fenders in the future? I know you have said you don't make a lot of bucks so I was just wondering why since you have a set of original wings. Actually the original wings don't look to bad in the pics. We're they beyond saving?

Thanks for the info Ron. I have done similar things. It's all but impossible to find side on photos of these cars. I had a factory sketch which helped with the shape but and period photo's from different angles. I always use period photo's to work from because I find people do strange things to the shapes of panels over time and that can become accepted as being correct (it can be a bit like Chinese whispers, the information gets changed as time goes on) I also had the original wings.
