thank you steve
leftie, it's not that is a reject as such. it's just that i obviously had a lesson to learn regarding the small split in the corner, and the only way i would learn that lesson would be to make the panel again. i spoke to peter about it and after i told him what i did to rectify it happening, he said that was correct lol. your welcome though

carrying on with making panels, the dash is at work now so i have access to my sander/grinder and making some use of my breaks to finish that piece. i started on making the replacements of the wheel well closing panels, i had bought some but they are nothing like what they should be, so i took a paper pattern and added material so i could get a better fit.
i really do like thumbnail dies for shrinking, the earlier 356 had only 2 beads in this panel, so i may change my mind and only put 2 beads in. we'll see how it goes... thanks for watching

Hi Neil,
Could you explain the paper and metal markings that seem to be for doing some work in those specific areas. I'm going to guess (not ASS-U-ME ) they are for some shrinking or stretching, but in the final panel I don't see a large change in the panel shape for those. Beginner here watching your project with great anticipation of each post and really admire your work and the talent you have. TX Mr fixit Chris |

hi Chris, they are just where the details are in the panel, swage lines, bend lines and so forth, the long oval shape lines are where the beads go. and that dotted line through it are just a centre reference
hope that helps

Shaping procedure.
Would you give a description of the the individual steps used to make this part.
I can see where you shrunk the left side but stopped well away from the upper section at the notch.I am assuming that during and/or after you broke the edge line you continued to shrink more? I am guessing you tipped the edge by hammering, what did you use for a dolly, or did you start by using a tipping wheel?

hi John, I shrunk up to the fold line and the panel did the rest, I shrunk the most where the curve is, the end which has a notch, I didn't have to shrink up there as that is at the end of the curve, so it would be like bending a straight piece of steel. it is only along the curve that needs shrinking, at its deepest this is 270mm deep. my jiggly machine has a throat depth of 260mm, but going a little bit of an angle I can get deeper, well until the next part of the panel hits the backbone of the machine.
I did run it through the wheel to clean up the line, but have since gone over that with a hammer and dolly to get a nice radius corner. I am just putting some details in the panel, just by hammer and dolly. but the beads i put in using the jiggly machine with a couple of dies i knocked up lol, basically a piece of 20mm round bar with the edges removed and a piece of 10mm flat bar with a notch ground out. I have a couple of pics I'll post when I get home

more of the same panel, adding details by hand mostly, but a couple of beads using a makeshift fence, of a piece of flat bar 'c' clamped to the panel.
not much more to do to this panel now, other than some cleaning up and finishing off thanks for watching

Very impressive, that looks like a LOT of shrinking.
