Default My Vase is going on a road trip.....

Hey Folks,

Excellent day for me today, as I have just been notified that my Aluminum Spiral Vase has been selected as an exhibit for the ArtPrize 2011 contest in Grand Rapids, Michigan! This event runs from September 21 through October 9, and will feature the works of 1582 artists from 36 countries.

This is the third year for the ArtPrize contest, which takes over a portion of the city for 19 days and turns it into an art festival. Museums, art galleries, and dozens of other establishments within a defined city perimeter are eligible to serve as the venues, who will display the submitted indoor and outdoor art works to the public for the duration of the event. The majority of the judging is done by the viewing public, who will vote online for their favorite entry using their cell phones, home computers, and Blackberries within the nine day voting window.

Here's a link to the ArtPrize 2011 website with all the details:
http://www.artprize.org/

My vase was selected by a gallery in Grand Rapids called "The Spot", which is located in the Federal Square Building within the event perimeter. My work will appear alongside 19 other entries they have chosen, which I'm told include at least a couple of other metalwork entries similar to mine.

I have to get to work on a display stand for it, which will be a motorized turntable that will rotate the vase slowly to emphasize the barber-shop pole effect of the spiral. I'm thinking of adding some LED lights, and maybe hanging an angled mirror above it so viewers can see the spiral seam inside.

Wish me luck guys, I've never been in an art show before! This is going to be fun.

Hi Ken,

That is really awesome and very well diserved! Will you be able to do a write up to describe just how much work and time went into making it?

Congratulations!!!

Thanks Dave,

I'm still mulling over the best approach for the display, but at this point I'm leaning more towards a photo essay type of thing, to help deal with the short attention span of viewers who will probably see a few hundred different exhibits over the course of their day. I'll definitely add a text portion as well to outline the details of it's construction, but I think I'll keep it short and concentrate on the assembly pictures which deliver the message faster than the written word.

When you do the motorized turntable, are you going to put the pins on it to show how true the shape is? If I didn't know anything about metalworking, I would have NO clue how much work went into that thing, but I think with some visual clues to just how true it is I would gauge it differently.

Ken,

Congratulations on being selected! That is an honor you are deserving of for your fine work.

As for any display, a simple riser draped with a small piece of cloth is all that is needed. The beauty is in your work. Anything else will detract from the artwork, not enhance it. A part of the beauty is the wonderment and mystery of the creation of a piece of art.

Think about galleries and art shows you've attended.

Your work is of a quality that can stand on it's own.
