Really nice work Dane. Do you use a shrinking disk or torch?

Thank you. I use a torch. Though ironically just this week I said I’d like to get and try a shrinking disk....I’ve said and thought it multiple times, though I just fall back to using the torch always. Any suggestions on purchasing one? Thanks

Awesome work and photos as usual. I would be very interested if you have the time to show your process to go from damage to a panel that looks better than new ever did. Your quality of work for a panel not done exceeds 99.9999% of shops final product.

I have a 9" and 5" shrinking disc but use the 5" the most lately.

Thank you for your input. If you wouldn’t mind, could you describe the difference and ease between torch shrinking and disk shrinking? Is there a specific reason you find yourself using the 5” more than the 9”?

I’ve watched many videos over time of shrinking with the disc, but as I mentioned just never purchased or tried one.

Thank you

Thank you very much. That is a huge compliment and I really appreciate it. I just try to do my work as best as I can and improve and learn the more I do. Thanks

Dane, if you can make it down to Dan Pate's Route 56 gathering later this spring, you'll have a chance to play with one...and most any other metalshaping tool you can imagine. Not to mention meeting a lot of kindred sprits up in your part of the world.

Yes, I was checking into that and am hoping to possibly make it there and maybe even bring a co-worker. I have to look at my schedule to see if it’s possible or not.

Heat control is the main thing over a torch.
The 5" I can get inside the door and other tight places over the 9". Also can use it one handed and have the air gun in the other. On the roof panel I didn't even use the air gun and worked well with no hardening from cooling too quick. All about preference and where it is being used. Low crown and 0.9mm steel was better without using the air to cool it. It is going to shrink either way. Don't heat to more than honey colour either as found the same hardening problems of the surface. Just my experience with it anyway.

I would like to mention 1 thing, shrinking disc is great, but only for certain applications,
One example of My experience has been with one particular door skin and bonnet, where the use of a shrinking disc worked fantastic, had the panel dead straight, but put it in the sun the skin and bonnet looked like the waves on a beach, when cooled down they returned to normal.
The only way to rectify was heat shrinking with oxy, and start from scratch.
So both have there place and you have to study which one is going to work.
